Prerequisites: Participants should have a working knowledge in GIS and Basics of Database

Course Objective

The objectives of this course is to provide comprehensive understanding of spatial databases, Managing Spatial database using PostGIS, Performing spatial queries in the database, and also this course focuses on the workflow for creating and sharing GIS data on the web. Participants will learn how to publish maps, and make users to understand the importance of publishing spatial data and also helps in understanding the maintaining databases.

Module I: Basics of Spatial Database

  • About Spatial Database;
  • Characteristics of spatial database;
  • Spatial Data type;
  • Spatial and non-spatial queries;
  • Modelling Spatial Database;
  • Indexing and its types.

Module II: Introduction and Installation of PostgreSQL and PostGIS

  • PostgreSQL Administration:
    • Introduction to PostgreSQL;
    • Server configuration, Managing Databases;
    • Managing Databases;
    • Monitoring Database.
  • Postgis:
    • Introduction to PostGIS;
    • PostGIS for PostgreSQL;
    • Introduction to Geometry in PostGIS.
  • Installation:
    • Installing PostgreSQL;
    • Installing PostGIS for PostgreSQL;
    • Understanding pgAdmin of PostgreSQL.

Module III: Geometry Types and working with spatial database

  • PostGIS Geography types – Geometry Collection in Postgis;
  • Working with PostGIS – Creating a spatial database;
  • Loading spatial data in to the database;
  • Data retrieval – Spatial and Non-Spatial Queries.

Module IV: Introduction to Web Map Server

  • WebGIS –Web Map Server and its prominence
  • GeoServer basics:
    • Introducing GeoServer;
    • Installation of GeoServer;
    • Overview of Web Administration Interface;
    • Supported Data formats in GeoServer;
    • Publishing Maps;
    • Introduction to Services and its types.
  • Installation:
    • Installing PostgreSQL;
    • Installing PostGIS for PostgreSQL;
    • Understanding pgAdmin of PostgreSQL.

Module V: GeoServer and Google Earth

  • About KML Files;
  • Publishing a Spatial Data as KML file;
  • Associate GeoServer with Google Earth;
  • Working with Labels and Legends in Google Earth;
  • Performing Common Query Language (CQL);
  • Introducing Watermark and KML Score.

On Completion

On completion of this course you can:

  • Understand the difference between Spatial and Non-Spatial Databases.
  • Understand how to load and manage the spatial Data using Postgis.
  • Understand how to load spatial data and publish them using GeoServer.
  • Learn how to Publishing a Spatial Data as KML file.
